Introducing Cedar City Chiropractor Dr. Russel A. Smith, DC, QN
I remember well when the lights came back on. It had been several years since I took that nasty playground fall, but the devastating effects were lifted in an instant!
In the fifth grade I fell off the parallel bar face first into the ground… I was shaken, and bloody. A little comfort from my mother, and a couple of cookies and I was ready to play the next day – but all was not well. Soon my grades began to slip, I became disruptive in class, and my attention span was shot. For several years I struggled with school, and my mother was told I would not be able to handle college. But thanks to the work of Dr. Steven Hion, a chiropractor, I was able to go on and finish more than 9 years of college and earn my Doctorate degree in chiropractic. Now, because of the work of Dr. Hion, I have been able to help thousands of people with their health care problems.
I always wanted to be a doctor – in fact my mother tells the story of how in kindergarten, I told my teachers that I wanted to be a doctor and prescribe the proper medicine – who knew that meant teaching the public about the necessity of proper nutrition, exercise and a healthy, free flowing nervous system?
I began my education seeking entry into the health care field as a psychiatric technician; wherein I could work as a nurse in the mental health and developmentally disabled hospitals. I received my state license in 1979. I worked in this field for the better part of the next 10 years.
Knowing I had more in me, more to do with my life, I continued to pursue my goal of being a doctor and after my experience with chiropractic I knew there was only one choice of specialization. After the standard “pre-med” requirements, I attended the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic where after 5 years of post graduate studies I earned my degree and title of Doctor of Chiropractic.
I realized early on that simply making someone feel better, but not addressing the long term effects and consequences of patch up care was wrong both professionally and ethically. I have learned over the years, that making sure my patients understand the full extent of their problem, its future effects and their treatment options has created better patient doctor communication and understanding of what they can expect by the decisions they make whether they choose relief, correction or wellness care.
It goes with out saying that that the patient who is ready to meet me half way in obtaining their health care goals will always do better and respond faster to care.
When I am making decisions or considerations regarding the necessary care my patients will need, I always take into consideration as to what is reasonable and obtainable. Not every one is fixable, for some, the amount of spinal decay will render them with only one option, symptom relief – it is always hard for me to explain to a patient that prior choices, misinformation or simply because nobody ever told them the necessity of caring for their spine, has put them in a non repairable state and the best we will be able to offer is symptom relief, or at best keep them from getting worse. Fortunately, this is rare with the advanced techniques and programs we offer at Smith Chiropractic & Nutritional Wellness Center.
I am extremely active in the community bringing the concepts of restoring health and preventive wellness to Cedar City and the surrounding communities via my weekly radio program – “Cedar City Health” This is a lot of fun as I accept calls from the community and we discuss various health and well being related topics LIVE and uncensored! It is always exciting.
We offer a wide range of topics that we present free of charge to community groups, enrichment night activities, or specialty clubs throughout the Southern Utah area.
